What causes back pain?
In general, pain is a sensation transmitted through the nerves and can occur when muscles go into spasm, which is frequently the case with back injuries.
A muscle spasm is an abrupt and forceful contraction of a muscle, which can last for minutes or hours. It is often associated with great pain. Pressure or "pinching" of the nerves in the spine can also cause severe pain in the back and legs.
What are the leading causes of back injuries?
Back injuries are most commonly caused by work-related injuries, slip and falls and motor vehicle accidents. Other causes may include acts of violence or sports-related activities.
Are there symptoms to look for with a back injury?
If you are experiencing any of the following, you should contact a physician so that your injury may be evaluated:
- Severe to mild pain in the neck, head or back
- Headaches
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or buzzing in the ear
- Sensitivity to loud noises
- Vertigo (dizziness) or unsteadiness
- Blurred vision or light sensitivity
- Difficulties concentrating, focusing or thinking
- Nausea and vomiting
- Tingling or loss of sensation in the hand, fingers, feet, or toes
- Loss of control over any part of the body
- Urinary or bowel urgency, incontinence, or retention
- Difficulty with balance and walking
- Impaired breathing after injury
- Unusual lumps on the back, especially the spinal area
What laws are used to protect my rights when I've sustained a back injury?
It depends on how the injury was sustained.
* A safety violation of a building code or ASTM can be the basis for negligence in a slip and fall incident.
* Worker's compensation laws are in place to protect your rights when injured on the job.
* If you are injured in an auto accident, personal injury laws will apply.
* Lastly, if you have sustained an injury because of a defective product, product liability laws will be focused on.
What general treatments are available for back injuries?
Muscle relaxants (and other drug treatments), therapy, and surgery are all presently used treatment options.
